Narrative

Lucy was the 11th child of Edward and Sabrina Hobson. Lucy was given her mother's name as her middle name. Edward was a shipping clerk and warehouseman. The large family, and their large house in Crumpsall on the outskirts of the city, reflected their relatively well-off lifestyle.
Lucy was 2 years old when her mother died, shortly after giving birth to her youngest daughter Florence. Within 3 months of her mother's death, Lucy's father remarried, to a woman 10 years younger, with no children. Lucy's younger sister Florence was baptised on 4 September 1865, shortly after being born. Lucy's older sister Sarah Jane (aged 5) and her older brother Herbert Joseph (aged 5) were both baptised on 19 November 1865. Lucy would have been about 2 when these baptisms took place, but she was not baptised until 2 June 1867, when she was nearly 4 years old.
1871 Lucy aged 7 was living with 5 older siblings, her father and stepmother. Her father is a clerk in a shipping office. Brother Edward 21 is a warehouseman. Brother Ambrose 17 is a mill operator. Brother Henry 14 is an office boy. Sarah 12, Herbert 10 and Lucy 7 are all at school. Sisters Elizabeth 24 and Mary Ann 23 are working as servants at two nearby houses. Brother William 19 is newly married and working as a sawyer.
1881 Lucy aged 17 is working as a general servant, in a street very near to her parents.
About 7 years later, Lucy aged 24 meets Henry Rowland aged 49. Lucy became pregnant and probably moved away from her family because of this, and probably never saw her parents or siblings again.
On 16 April 1889 Grace Rowland was born. Lucy was 25 and Henry was 50. Henry and Lucy never married but they had 6 more children together, and lived at many addresses in Ancoats.
There is no trace of the family in the 1891 census.
1897 daughter Helena Maud died of pneumonia and tuberculosis aged 6. Her death was registered by Harriet Cassidy who was present at the death. Lucy may have also been present but she was also 8 months pregnant. A month later Lucy has a daughter who is named Harriet, presumably after Harriet Cassidy, who was probably a neighbour of Lucy's.
From 1898 to 1902 the family lived in Brown's Court, off Lloyd Street near Oldham Road. These inner courts were behind the terraced houses and were dark and dismal places. The family was going through very hard times.
1898 daughter Harriet died aged 20 months, and was buried in Philips Park Cemetery. Cause of death was "Tabes Mesenterica Convulsions" which is the result of being "weaned too soon, or fed on indigestible substances" causing "inflammation of the lining membrane of the intestines". Harriet died in the 6 weeks between twin sons Henry and Herbert being born and christened.
1899 daughter Elizabeth Ellen died aged 5, and was buried in Philips Park Cemetery. Cause of death was Meningitis.
Henry and Lucy had lost 3 children in 3 years, but their other four other children all survived and had children of their own.
In the 1901 census, in Brown's Court, Henry was recorded as Harry (which was not uncommon) but for some reason his son Henry was recorded as Benjamin. Maybe Henry was trying to hide himself from the authorities?
When Henry died in 1903, the family were living at 59 Barratt Street. Daughter Grace was 14, twin sons Henry and Herbert were 5 and daughter Elizabeth was just 2 years old. Lucy is still at this address three years later when her daughter Mary Jane is baptised. The baptism gives the father's name as Henry Hobson but Henry Rowland had died 3 years earlier. The father was probably Thomas Lemons, who Lucy married within a month, and who was living just around the corner in Lloyd Street. Mary Jane's birth was not registered. In 1895 Henry and Lucy were living at 16 Lavender Street. Henry and Herbert were baptised on 14 Dec 1898. Two weeks after this the son of Thomas Lemons brother was baptised. The family were living at 18 Lavender Street. It seems highly likely that Lucy and Thomas met before Henry died.
When Lucy married Thomas Lemons in 1906, her surname is recorded as Hobson and she was recorded as being a widow. She gives her father's name as Edward Rowland, a combination of her father's first name and Henry's surname. Her father's occupation matches that of her real father.
1907 daughter Grace 18 married John Thomas Pearce 20.
1908 son Thomas Lemons was born, and baptised in the same church as his older sister Mary Jane.
1909 birth registration for son Thomas gives Lucy's name as "Lucy Lemons late Rowland formerly Hobson".
1911 Lucy and the Lemons family moved a short distance to 55 Barratt Street, where they were still living in 1921. Lucy had 7 children with Henry and 2 children with Thomas. The births of her last child with Henry and her first child with Thomas were not registered (all her other children were registered). On the 1911 census Lucy gives the number of children as 7 not 9, probably so this number would match the births that were registered.
1919 daughter Elizabeth 17 marries Thomas Brown 18. Elizabeth gives her age as 19 but she is 4 months from her 18th birthday. Their son Ernest was born 4 months after the wedding. Witnesses to the marriage were her brother Herbert and Ethel Pearce (born 1897, married 1922) the youngest sister of Grace's husband John Thomas Pearce.
1921 son Herbert 23 marries Rose Eveline Huntington 22 on New Year's day. Herbert's twin brother Henry was the first witness. Herbert and Rose were living just 3 doors from each other. Herbert's first child was born 4 months after they married, and he named her Lucy Sabrina after his mother.
1929 husband Thomas Lemons dies aged 65. The two children he had with Lucy never got married and they lived with Lucy until she died.
1931 son Henry 33 married May Johnson 32. Henry was still living at 55 Barratt Street, probably with his mother Lucy and his younger siblings, and was still living there when their daughter Vera was born, but his mother had probably moved out and was living with her two youngest children.
Lucy died in 1939, at 36 Southern Drive, Collyhurst. Her unmarried son Thomas died at the same address in 1956 (aged 48) and her unmarried daughter Mary Jane died at the same address in 1963 (aged 55). They were all buried in the same grave. Lucy's great-granddaughter Evelyn Conroy, who died before her first birthday in 1941, was also buried in the same grave.
