Rowland, HENRY
Narrative
Henry and his twin brother Herbert were born at 5 Brown's Court, Ancoats. A court was the internal area surrounded by the back halves of terraced houses that faced onto the streets that surrounded them. They were dark and dismal places with no running water or sanitation.
Henry was 5 when his father died in 1903. His mother remarried 3 years later in 1906.
Henry joined the army in 1916 just before his 18th birthday. When he joined he had a scar on the left side of his chin and the left side of his neck. He was less than 5 feet in height. He spent almost a year in France, before coming back on leave for 2 weeks in August 1919. He missed his sister Elizabeth's wedding by 3 days. He reported back for duty 3 days late, for which he was punished (confined to barracks and loss of 3 days pay). Did he do this in vengeance for missing his sister's wedding? I'd like to think so. He served for 3 years and received the British War Medal for being posted overseas and The Victory Medal for entering a theatre of war. He had a gold pocket watch which he brought back from France. It was manufactured in Germany by Drusus.
Henry completed the 1921 census for his mother and his step-family. His step-father Thomas was a street cleaner, who possibly couldn't write (the 1911 census looks like it was completed by someone else, perhaps Henry's mother Lucy?). Henry gets his own age and his mothers slighty wrong, but he is 5 years out for his step-father thinking he was older than he was, but still younger than his mother. Henry's step-father died in 1929.
Henry didn't get married until he was 32. His wife May Johnson was the same age, and their daughter Vera was born 5 months later. Henry was still living in the same house he was in 1911, with his mother and his siblings. His mother probably moved out shortly after, and she lived with her two children Mary Jane Lemons and Thomas Lemons until she died.
During the Second World War the family's house was bombed so they moved to 34 Sun Street, the same house where William Henry Pearce and his family were living in 1939. William Henry Pearce was the eldest son of Grace Rowland, the eldest of Henry's siblings.
Henry was a keen United fan and he worked as a Turner for Smiths of Trafford Park. He died of a heart attack when he was on his way home from work. Gary was only 3 years old when Henry died but he remembers his waistcoat and gold watch chain, and the wooden briefcase that he used to carry and sell cigarettes after the second world war.

Henry was born at 4.55pm. The time was recorded because he had a twin brother Herbert. Henry was probably born first as he is given his father's name.

Family name is recorded as "Roland" not Rowland. Head is "Harry" (61) not Henry. Wife Lucy (42). Children: Grace (13). Twins (aged 2) are called "Benjamin" and Herbert. But this is definitely the correct family.
