Narrative

Edward and five of his younger siblings were born in Plymouth. They were baptised in a Wesleyan Chapel in Plymouth, and baptised a second time when the family went back to Ashton-Under-Lyne. Edward lived in Devon until he was about 10, when his family moved from Devon to Manchester. Edward appears to have continued with the Wesleyan faith when he was in Manchester, which is probably why he moved to Crumpsall, where there was a Wesleyan church.
Edward was literate, working as a clerk and then a book keeper. He married Sabrina when he was 29. They got married in Stockport, but they were both living in Manchester before and after this. Edward was able to support a large family of 13 children. His first two children were named after his father Thomas and his mother Hannah. All but one of his children lived until they were old enough to leave home, which was quite an achievement in the 19th century.

1861 they were living in John Street, Crumpsall, near a Wesleyan Chapel, with their 10 children. Lucy was born in 1863 and Florence was born in 1865. Edward's wife Sabrina died shortly after Florence's birth. Two months after Sabrina's death, two children were baptised, Sarah Jane aged 7 and Herbert Joseph 4. Lucy, who was 2 years old at the time, was not baptised for another 18 months. Edward remarried a few years later. His new wife Elizabeth was 10 years younger than him, born in the Lake District, but she had been working in Crumpsall as a housemaid. They got married in Leeds, maybe for privacy, maybe to prevent any objections from his children? Edward and his new wife seemed keen to get the children to fend for themselves and out of the house, whether that was out to work, or married. This may explain how his daughter Lucy came to be with Henry Rowland who was 23 years her senior. Daughter Hannah 20 got married in 1865/66, and Edward's first two granchildren were baptised in 1867 at St Thomas Crumpsall. Edward's daughter Lucy Sabrina was baptised at the same time. In 1870, son William 19 and daughter Martha Ann 18 were both married in Manchester Cathedral.

1871 Edward and Elizabeth had 6 children living with them, Edward 21, Ambrose, 16, Henry 14, Sarah 12, Herbert 10, and Lucy 6. They were living in a large house in a prime location near Queen's Park in Cheetham Hill.
Married daughter Hannah 26 and her family were living in nearby Tonge.
Daughter Elizabeth 24 was living in Crumpsall and working as a general servant, where she got married in 1872.
Daughter Mary Ann 23 was boarding nearby, with a family that would become her future in-laws, but only after she had married someone else in 1874, who died young.
Married son William 19 and his family were living in Crumpsall.
Married daughter Martha Ann 18 and her family were living in Crumpsall.
11 Oct 1873, son Herbert aged 12 was imprisoned for stealing 3 pairs of trousers. Sentenced to 14 days hard labour, and 5 years of school.

1881 Edward 57 and his wife 48 only have their son Henry 24 still living at home. Henry would get married in 1883.
Married daughter Hannah 36 is living with her family in Bury.
Married daughter Elizabeth 34 is living in Crumpsall, and her brother Ambrose 26 is living with them.
Married son Edward 31 is living in Crumpsall.
Daughter Lucy 17 is living in Cheetham working as a general servant.
The other five children are unaccounted for in 1881: Mary Ann 33 (married John William Wroe in 1874), William 30 (married Elizabeth Newton 1870), Martha Ann 29 (married William Elliott in 1870), Sarah Jane 22, and Herbert Joseph 20. Mary Ann's husband died in 1881. She married Robert Singleton in 1882, and they moved to Wales where they lived until they died. Nothing is known about the other four children.

Edward died in 1893, aged 69, and he was buried at Wesleyan Methodist Cemetery in Cheetham Hill in the same grave as his wife who was buried there in 1865. Also, his daughter Florence who was buried in 1866. Also buried in the same grave were 2 of his grandsons (sons of his son Henry), Henry 1887 age 18 months, and Thomas 1895 age 8 months.
