Narrative

Thomas was the oldest child of William and Mary. He had 4 younger brothers and 1 younger sister. Only his brother Edward has been found in the 1841 census, the other siblings were aged 37-47. Thomas was 10 when his father died. Maybe his mother was poor, which is why Thomas joined the Royal Marines in Plymouth?

1803 father dies when Thomas is aged 10.
1811 Thomas marries aged 18, his wife Hannah is only 16. Thomas is a Weaver. Neither of them sign their names. They marry in Manchester Cathedral, not the family church of St Micheal in Ashton-Under-Lyne. Perhaps against his mother's wishes?

1813-1819 Thomas and Hannah have 3 children, all baptised in St Micheal church Ashton-Under-Lyne. Thomas was not present for the third baptism. Did Thomas go to Plymouth (between 1815 and 1819)?

1816 daughter Mary died aged 3, buried at St Micheal, Ashton-Under-Lyne.

1816-1824 family move to Plymouth.

1824 son Edward baptised in Plymouth. Thomas has no occupation.
1826 dau Mary baptised (born 1825) in St Micheal, Ashton-Under-Lyne. Thomas is a Weaver.
1824-1835 Edward and 4 other children born in Plymouth. So Thomas and his wife spent at least 11 years there. Thomas was in the Royal Marines for about 10 years.
1826 two children baptised on a visit back to A-U-L
1835 last entry in Plymouth

1835-1838 family return to A-U-L.

1838 Thomas is a Weaver when son Thomas is married in Manchester, so no longer a Sergeant in the Royal Marines,
1841 census - Livesey Street, Manchester. Working as a Weaver.
1843 Clerk in the Post Office. Thomas probably learned to read and write in the Royal Marines (he did not sign his marriage bann when he was 18).
