William was probably baptised in Ashton Under Lyne, the son of Edward and Margaret, but there are no baptisms for any siblings, and there is no marriage for his parents, which suggests his parents moved to Ashton Under Lyne from somewhere else.
William worked as a cooper, making barrels. He was a widower aged 30 when he married Mary Ashworth on 10 April 1792. Their son Thomas was baptised just over a year later on 6 Jun 1793. They were married for 10 years and had 5 more children. William died when he was 40 and was buried on 7 April 1803. His son John was born 8 months later on 3 December 1803.
