Narrative
May's father wasn't always living at home, and her mother died in a workhouse. May and her siblings had a hard upbringing, but their mother Sarah had seen wealth and prosperity when she was a child. Gary Fisher remembers his grandma May as someone with high standards. Things always had to be done right and proper. No short cuts or slovenliness was allowed. Maybe May did this as a result of her upbringing, from her mother, and May wanted things to be better for her children than her own early life had been.
1899 May was born at 51 Holland Street, and baptised at All Souls church. Her father Edward was a Fustian Cutter aged 33, her mother was 32. Her mother had no living relatives.
1901 brother George died aged 1.
1911 census. Edward 44 head, Sarah Jane 43 wife, and children May 12 and Alfred 6 are living in 1 room at 87 George Street, Hulme. Edward and Sarah have had 5 children and 2 have died. Living in another room at the same address is John Gough. Living in another room is Whittle family of 2. And Timperley family of 4 in 3 other rooms. Next door at number 89 there are 2 people in 1 room and 6 people in the other 5 rooms. May's eldest sister Elizabeth and husband (William Mercer) and 2 children are living at 93 George Street (3 doors away).
1920 May's mother dies aged 52 in a workhouse. May was 21, and her brother Alfred was 16. May's father had probably died before this but his death has not been found.
1921 May is living with the McGoldrick family, at 53 Ravald Street, where she was still living when she got married in 1931. Her sister Elizabeth aged 34, who is now a widow, was living with her brother Alfred aged 18, in Hulme. Elizabeth had five children aged 3 to 13 but these have not been found in the 1921 census.
In the 1960s Gary Fisher attended Hague Street School then went to his grandmother May's house after school. May had worked in the textile trade and was knowledgable about cloth and the quality of it. She used to do her washing in a dustbin-like tub in the back yard, and Gary would turn the handle of the mangle to squeeze the water out of the washed clothes.
1984 May was 83 years old. Gary and Erica Fisher were living in Holland and were back in Manchester for Christmas. Erica was pregnant with Lysanne. May asked Erica if she could put her hand on Erica's tummy to feel the baby. May like most of her generation was not really a tactile person, and this struck Gary as quite a thing. May died just over a month later, and Lysanne Fisher was born on 11th April 1985.
