Narrative
1823 John's parents Thomas and Sarah were married in Stafford.
1828 sister Jane born, named after paternal grandmother.
1831 sister Emma born.
1839 John born named after paternal grandfather.
1843 brother Thomas is born, named after his father.
The gaps between the births are much larger than normal but no other births have been found.
1841 census the family are living in Chapel Street Stafford, where father Thomas is a Shoemaker.
1845 The family move to 37 Oldham Street Manchester. John's parents are in their mid-forties.
1846 newspaper article documented the "Theft of a pair of men's Clarence boots from Mr Earp boot and shoe maker of Oldham Street".
1851 John is 11 and living with his parents in their shop at 51 Oldham Street. Ann Heath, from Stafford, is living nearby in Angel Meadow. Ann Heath was a similar age to John's parents, and she adopted John's daughter Sarah, following John's death.
1854 eldest sister Jane, married Joseph Kershaw in Manchester Cathedral. Sister Emma was one of the witnesses. Newspaper announcement "Joseph Kershaw to Jane, eldest daughter of Thomas Earp, of Stafford".
1859 John's sister Emma dies in Scarborough, aged 28, single. Newspaper announcement "On the 22nd inst. at Scarborough, aged 28 years. Emma, youngest daughter of Mr. Thomas Earp, of this city, formerly of Stafford".
1860 John's father Thomas dies in Manchester. Newspaper announcement "Mr. Thomas Earp, 51 Oldham Street, late of Stafford".
1861 John is living in Angel Meadow, a short distance from Oldham Street, where his mother and brother Thomas were living . Mary Bentley, his wife to be was still living in Stafford. Perhaps Mary came and stayed with Ann Heath, which is how she met John?
1861 Ann Heath is living half a mile from where Sarah's parents would be living in 1867.
1865 John married Mary Bentley at St Johns church on Deansgate. There were no family witnesses or newspaper announcement. Perhaps he married against his mother's wishes?
1866 birth of son Harry Kershaw Earp who died aged 6 months. Harry's middle name was taken from his uncle Joseph Kershaw who had married John's sister Jane but they had no children. Newspaper announcement "Earp - December 18, aged 6 months, Harry Kershaw, son of John Earp, of Manchester".
John and Mary had two more children Sarah Jane 1867, and Thomas Henry 1870. Sarah Jane was named after John's mother. John gave his name as John Sergeant Earp on Sarah's birth certificate, possibly because that was the surname of his married aunt Elizabeth. He did not use the name again.
1871 John is living with his wife and their baby Thomas, near Hyde Road. John is also recorded on the census as living with his mother and brother Thomas on Oldham Street, with his daughter Sarah aged 3.
1873 John was admitted to Prestwich Lunatic Asylum as a pauper, where he died 4 months later. Cause of death was "Brain Disease. Exhaustion Certified".
Two years after John's death, his sister Jane died in Manchester Royal Lunatic Asylum, Cheadle. Two years later, John's mother Sarah died insolvent. Seven months later, John's younger brother Thomas died single, aged 34.
The Earp family are buried in two family graves at St Luke Cemetery, Cheetham Hill. The first grave contains John's sister Emma who died in Scarborough aged 27 in 1859, and John's father who died one year later in 1860, it also contains John's brother Thomas who died in 1878 aged 34. The other grave contains John who was buried in 1873, John's sister Jane aged 47 buried in 1875, and John's mother aged 77 buried in 1877. St Luke's was the wealthiest of Manchester's churches, which illustrates how well the family had been doing for most of their lives.
