Earp, SARAH JANE
Birth Name | Earp, SARAH JANE 1a 2a |
Also Known As | Johnson*, Sarah Jane 3a 4a 5a 6a |
Gender | female |
Age at Death | 52 years, 9 months, 1 day |
Narrative
Sarah's father died when Sarah was 6 years old and her mother remarried 4 years later in Stafford. Sarah's mother took her son Thomas back to Stafford but left her daughter Sarah in Manchester. Sarah's only relatives in Manchester, were her Uncle George and his family. Sarah may have been taken in by them, but this seems unlikely, as a few years later, Sarah 14 was adopted and living with Ann Heath.
1841 Ann Heath's parents were living in Stafford very close to, and between, John Earp and his parents, and Mary Bentley and her parents.
1851 Ann Heath, from Stafford, is living near John Earp (Sarah's father).
1861 Ann Heath is living half a mile from where Sarah's parents would be living in 1867.
1861 John was living with his parents in Oldham Street. Mary Bentley was still living in Stafford but her older brother George had moved to Manchester.
1865 John Earp marries Mary Bentley.
1866 brother Harry Kershaw Earp was born, but he died aged 6 months. Harry was named after his uncle Joseph Kershaw who had married Jane Earp but they had no children. Newspaper announcement "Earp - December 18, aged 6 months, Harry Kershaw, son of John Earp, of Manchester".
1867 Sarah Jane was born in Chorlton Upon Medlock. She was named after John's mother and his wife. For some reason, her father John gave his name as John Sergeant Earp on Sarah's birth certificate. Peter Sergeant was married to John's sister Elizabeth but it is unlikely to be John's real name.
1870 brother Thomas Henry born.
1871 Sarah 3 is living with her grandmother on Oldham Street. Her father John and her uncle Thomas are also living there. John is also listed as living with his wife and their baby Thomas, near Hyde Road. It is more likely he was living with his mother, given what happens next.
1873 Sarah's father was admitted to Prestwich Lunatic Asylum as a pauper, where he died 4 months later. Cause of death was "Brain Disease. Exhaustion Certified". Sarah was 5, her brother Thomas was 3, and her mother was 29.
1875 aunt Jane dies in Cheadle Lunatic Asylum. Jane had no children and her husband Joseph Kershaw was already dead.
1877 (May) Sarah's mother remarries in Stafford aged 33 (banns were in Feb). Sarah 10 was probably living above the shop in Oldham Street with her grandmother.
1877 (June) Sarah's grandmother dies.
1878 (Jan) Sarah's uncle Thomas dies.
Sarah's only relatives in Manchester, are her uncle George and his family, but Sarah may not have known where they were living.
1881 Sarah 14, is living in Angel Meadow with Ann Heath aged 70, a Sempstress from Stafford who has adopted Sarah. They are boarding with a family of 5. In the same census, Sarah's future husband is living in nearby Nelson Street. Sarah's mother and brother Thomas are living in Stafford where they stayed until they died aged 49 and 64.
1884 Ann Heath dies with Sarah present and Sarah is the witness on Ann's death certificate. Sarah is 16 years old, and once again, she is alone in Manchester.
1886 Sarah 18 marries Edward Johnson 21. They both sign their names, and their signatures are clear and well written. Much better than their witnesses and the signatures on other marriage entries.
1887 daughter Elizabeth born. Named after her paternal grandmother.
1891 census they are boarding with another family.
1891 daughter Alice born but dies within 2 months. Probably amed after Sarah's cousin. Not found a baptism for the first two children. It would be more than 7 years before they had another child.
1899 daughter May born. Baptised in All Souls, Ancoats.
1900 son George born. Baptised in St Mark, Hulme.
1901 census father Edward is not at home. Sarah 34, Elizabeth 14, May 2, George 4 months. George died in 1901 aged 1.
1906 sister Elizabeth marries William Mercer.
1911 census Edward 44, Sarah Jane 43, and children May 12 and Alfred 6 are living in 1 room. At the same address, living in another room is John Gough, living in another room is the Whittle family of 2. The Timperley family of 4 are living in 3 other rooms. Daughter Elizabeth and her husband and 2 children are living 3 doors away, in 4 rooms.
1920 Sarah died aged 52 in Withington Workhouse on 15 April and was buried there on 23 April. Her next of kin is "sister Annie Jones of 26 Great Jackson Street Hulme". Sarah's daughter May is 21, and son Alfred (if he is still alive) is 16. Sarah's oldest daughter was living nearby with her family.
