Narrative
Sarah’s mother died in 1822, and was buried at St Mary’s, Stafford.
Just over a year later, Sarah married Thomas Earp in St Mary, Stafford. They were both 23.
Sarah’s father died in 1835, and was buried at St Mary’s, Stafford.
Sarah and Thomas didn't have any children until they had been married almost 5 years. They only had 4 children in total, and this spanned more than 15 years. Sarah was probably helping Thomas with his shoe making business. All of their children were baptised in Stafford.
1844 The family moved to Manchester, with children aged 1 to 16, and Sarah and Thomas in their mid-forties.
1860 husband Thomas dies, when they were both 60, and Sarah took over the running of the shop in Oldham Street, with the help of her children.
1870 Sarah wrote her Will. Her eldest daughter Jane was married to Joseph Kershaw, daughter Emma had died, son John was married to Mary Bentley and son Thomas was single. Sarah leaves her son Thomas "the bed bedding and all furniture in his own room also the mahagony chest of drawers in my room". "The Stock and remaining furniture etc to be valued and equally divided between my sons John, Thomas and daughter Jane Kershaw providing she is in her sane mind and capable of receiving it or if not to be placed in my Executors hands to be spent upon her as they might think fit". "In consideration of the services of my son Thomas I leave to him the goodwill and business carried on by me at 51 Oldham Street in consideration that he pays his brother John the sum of fifty pounds as his share of the goodwill in the business". Sarah's concerns about Jane's sanity, would sadly be proved to be correct.
1871 daughter Jane is in Manchester Royal Lunatic Asylum, Cheadle, where she died 4 years later. Sarah is still running the shoe shop in Oldham Street. Her sons John aged 31 and Thomas aged 27 are still living with her and working in the shop, and there is another shop assistant Hannah Winfield aged 31 born in Hixon, Staffordshire. Son John is also shown on the 1871 census living with his wife.
1873 son Thomas aged 30, opens his own shoe shop on Cheetham Hill Road, where he also makes the shoes for his mother's shop.
1873 death of son John aged 34 in Lunatic Asylum, Bury New Road. Cause of death "Brain Disease. Exhaustion Certified."
1875 death of daughter Jane aged 47 in Manchester Royal Lunatic Asylum, Cheadle, Cheshire.
1877 Sarah died at the shop on Cheetham Hill Road. Sadly, she was insolvent, so Thomas was left with no money, and no family. Thomas died 7 months later.

LOCAL LAW CASE
Palliser v Earp
In the High Court of Justice, Chancery Division,
yesterday, before Mr. Justice Fry (vacation judge).
Mr. Turner said this was a motion for the appointment
of a receiver and manager of the estate of the late Mrs.
Sarah Earp, of Manchester. Mrs. Earp died on the
27th of June, 1877, and on the 1st September a meeting
of the creditors was called by Messrs. Sale and
Company, solicitors, of Manchester. A statement of
accounts was laid before that meeting by Mr. J. Fowler,
accountant, of Manchester, from which it appeared
there was enough to pay about 8s. 6d. in the pound,
thereby showing that the defendant, Mr. Thomas Earp,
could have no interest whatever in the estate. The
executors proved the will; and he now applied for the
appointment of a receiver. - His lordship: On what
ground? - Mr. Turner: On the ground of insolvency.
His lordship: That is no ground, because the legal
personal representative is responsible. - Mr. Turner said
the estate was absolutely insolvent. From the state-
ment of accounts which was put befoe the meeting it
appeared that the assets were £1,004, and the debts
£2,070. - His lordship said he could not grant the application.
