Heath, Ann
Narrative
Ann Heath was born in Stafford, the daughter of William Heath and Ann Evans. Ann died young and William married Elizabeth Lawton, Sarah Lawton's sister. Ann would have met her cousins Thomas Earp and Sarah Lawton in Stafford, and Ann was 35 when they left for Manchester in 1845.
1841 Not found Ann (or her 2 brothers) in Manchester or Stafford. Mary Aspinall was living in Back Bilberry Street Angel Meadow.
1851 Ann 40 living at 6 Back Bilberry Street Angel Meadow with widower Mary Aspinall 65 a Cotton Trader from Lancashire. Ann is working as a Boot Binder, probably for the Earp family in Oldham Street.
1861 Ann 50 working as servant/housemaid in large house at 10 Hyde Road, close to where John and Mary Earp were living when their children Sarah Jane and Thomas were born. Mary Aspinall 75 is living alone at 13 Back Bromley St.
1871 Ann 61 is back in Angel Meadow, working as a servant for Mary Aspinall 85 who is still lving at 13 Back Bromley St. Mary Aspinall was buried on 31 Aug 1871 at St Luke Cheetham Hill (grave 42/39). Sarah Jane Earp was 3 and living with her grandmother on Oldham Street, with her father John and her uncle Thomas. Father John is also listed as living with his wife and their baby Thomas, near Hyde Road. It is more likely John was living with his mother, given what happens next.
1873 Sarah Jane's father was admitted to Prestwich Lunatic Asylum as a pauper, where he died 4 months later. Cause of death "Brain Disease. Exhaustion Certified".
1877 in May Sarah's mother remarries in Stafford aged 33 (banns were in Feb). Sarah 10 is probably living in Oldham Street with her grandmother.
1877 in June Sarah's grandmother died insolvent. Seven months later, her Uncle Thomas died single, aged 34.
Sarah has no living relatives in Manchester.
1881 Ann 70 and Sara Jane Earp 14 are living as lodgers in Portland Street, Angel Meadow. Ann has adopted Sarah Jane.
1884 Ann died aged 74 in Bilberry Street, Angel Meadow. Sarah was 16, and was the witness to Ann's death. Ann was buried on 12 Jun 1884 in St Luke Cheetham, where the Earp family were all buried, and Mary Aspinall.
Sarah Jane was alone in Manchester.
