Narrative

Henry Rowland died 3 years before Mary Jane Hobson was baptised but his first name is used for her baptism. The address for the baptism is the same as Henry's death in Dec 1903, and Lucy's marriage in Dec 1906. Lucy married Thomas Lemon 6 weeks after Mary Jane was born, so Thomas was probably the father. Although Mary was baptised Hobson she called herself Lemon, presumably because she was told that Thomas was her father. No birth registration has been found for her.
The 1921 census was completed by her step-brother Henry who recorded her name as Jane, so this is presumably the name the family used. Her 1921 census age is a year younger than her real age, to give the impression she was born after her parents got married, rather than 6 weeks before they married.
Mary Jane and her younger brother Thomas never married. Their mother was living with them when she died in 1939, and they stayed at the same address until they died, aged 55 and 47 respectively. They were buried in the same grave as their mother but only Mary's name was added to the gravestone.
