Narrative

PARENTS
Janet's parents didn't marry. Her father was Richard Mockett, a sailor from Kent, who went back to Kent before his daughter's first birthday. Janet's baptism entry says "Richard Mocket from England said by Jean Flookard in Cockenzie and she had a daughter born July 4th 1767 baptised a few days after by by Mr Lee Episcople Minister in Edinburgh and named Janet. Witnesses Hannah Mitchel and Margaret Flookard. Being in fornication." Margaret Flookard was her mother's sister. Hannah Mitchel was her mother's sister-in-law (married to her mother's brother Alexander).
MOTHER MARRIES WILLIAM STEWART
When Janet was 3, her mother married William Stewart in Edinburgh. They had two sons, James and William, born in Cockenzie.
JANET MARRIES ANOTHER WILLIAM STEWART
When Janet was 20, she married William Stewart, who was 9 years older than her, and had been married before. They married in Edinburgh in Dec 1787. Their first child (James) was born on 5th October 1788 and baptised in Tranent on 25 Oct 1788. Before the baptism took place, William and Janet were "compeard" (summoned) before the Tranent Kirk Session on 12th October 1788, where they produced their marriage licence from Edinburgh (presumably so that James could be baptised). James and Janet had 8 further children, all born in Cockenzie.
DEATH AND BURIAL (uncertain)
1818 in Prestonpans aged 58 is most likely, but correct age was 51.
1837 in Dolphington, was some distance away and only source is the 1990 report from researcher.
