Narrative

EARLY LIFE
Richard had an older brother called Sampson, and two sisters, Mary and Sarah. One of his cousins was John Mockett, who wrote Mockett's Journal, published in 1836.

FATHER'S DEATH AND WILL
Richard was 10 when his father died. Richard's father owned Hopeville House with 9 acres land, and a fishing vessel that he inherited from his father, but these are not mentioned in his will. Richard and his brother were to inherit 100 pounds each (25,000 in 2023) when they reached the age of 21 under the terms of his father's will. His sisters were to receive 80 pounds each when they were 21, or when they got married, if that was sooner.

SISTER MARY
In 1764, his elder sister Mary aged 25 married Martin Cramp. The bond for the marriage licence was provided by Mary's uncle Elijah Mocket, brother of her deceased father. Martin Cramp was a schoolmaster, who owned his own house in St Peter's village. They had two children.

THANET TO TRANENT
Richard's brother was a shipmaster. When Richard was 21 and his brother was 23, they sailed from Thanet, Kent to Tranent, Scotland. His brother Sampson married Janet Hogg in March 1766. Daughter Anne was born in December, and son Alexander was born in February 1768. Richard and Jean Fleuker were 21 when they met in Leith. Their daughter Janet was born in July 1767, and baptised in Richard's absence. Richard didn't marry Jean, who six months later was compeared (summoned) to the Tranent Kirk Session on 24th January 1768 regarding her illegitimate daughter, in the following terms: "Jean Fluckhard, an unmarried young woman, brought forth a child on 4th July 1767, in her father's house. That Richard Mocket a sailor, was the father, and that the child was begot in Leith during her stay there, and that she acquainted him of being with child to him. That he was abroad at present, and that she had not heard from him since he went away, and had no letters to produce acknowledging himself to be the father. Declared further that the child was baptised at Edinburgh by Mr Lee, an Episcopalian minister, and that her sister and sister-in-law were witnesses. She was reproved for her fornication, and was desired to get a letter from Richard Mocket acknowledging himself to be the father of the child, and told that she behoved to lie under scandal till that should be done, and apply to the Session to have her scandal removed."

BACK TO KENT ######## this didn't happen ############
Did Richard and his brother Sampson go back home when they heard that Jean had appeared at the Tranent Kirk Session? Sampson's son was born in Tranent a month after this happened. Sampson doesn't appear to have taken any of his family back home to Kent. No burials have been found in Kent or Scotland for Sampson or his family. Richard's girlfriend Jean, and their daughter Janet, both got married in Edinburgh, to men called William Stewart.
Richard's mother died in May 1774. In November of the same year, Richard's 24 year old sister Sarah married Peter Cramp, the brother of her sister's husband Martin, who provided the bond for the marriage licence. Peter was a 30 year old widow. His first wife, Susannah Sackett, had died four years into their marrriage.
No death has been found for Richard's (now married) girlfriend Jean. His married daughter Janet died in Tranent in 1818, aged 51.
Richard's sister Mary died in July 1819, aged 79.
Richard didn't marry, and he died in 1826, aged 80.
Richard's sister Sarah died in November 1829 'in her 80th year, much beloved and respected'.
