Narrative

Richard was only two years old when his father died. His mother had five young children to bring up, which she did without remarrying, although she was only in her thirties. His mother died when Richard was 10, so Richard and his siblings were brought up by their uncle John, his mother's brother.

Not found marriage licence for Richard and Sarah. The only one missing in four generations. Not on the page for Mockett in Canterbury Marriage Licences Vol II 1619-1660.

Richard and Sarah had 6 children. 5 of them survived into adulthood (####### and had families of their own?). Their son John died when he was 4. Their first son was called Richard, which is why his father became known as Richard the elder. There had been no confusion with Richard the elder's own father as he died when Richard was two. Their second son was called Nicholas, after his maternal grandfather, and their first daughter was called Sara after her paternal grandmother Sara, or possibly after her mother Sarah. Their third son was called John, after the uncle who had raised Richard and his siblings. Their second and youngest daughter was called Anne, after her maternal grandmother. When their youngest son was born, Richard and Sarah had used the names of themselves, their parents, and the uncle who had raised Richard, so they named this son Isaac, which is the first time this name appears in the family.

"Richard Mockett, son of a notable Kent landowning family married Sarah, daughter of Nicholas Sampson of Reading Street Farm. Richard purchased Hopeville Farm (formerly known as Dumptons) in St. Peter's building their home opposite the church, now called The Old Farmhouse, and bears the initials RMS and the date 1682 above the porch. Their youngest son Isaac built Hopeville House nearby in 1723 and over the next two centuries the Mockett Estate increased to stretch as far as the present St. Peter's recreation ground, with successive heirs becoming leading figures in the Church and 'squires' of the village."

In June 1692, Richard writes his will "being sick in body but of good and perfect sense and memory". He was relatively wealthy, which is supported by the properties he left in his will:
- wife Sarah, his bedstead and bedding, one chest and press cupboard, ten pairs of sheets, four pillow coats, one dozen napkins, four towels, one small brass kettle, and one skillet
- son Richard, twenty pounds
- son Nicholas, twenty pounds, house and land at Ebbesfleet
- granddaughter Mary Church, ten pounds [daughter of Sara - ] #### first/only grandchild?
- youngest son Isaac, Richard's farmhouse in St Peter's with barns, stables, orchards, gardens, yards, outhouses, and all the lands arable and pasture, Isaac must pay his mother fifteen pounds a year, and give her three bushels of apples from his orchard.
Executors were wife Sarah and youngest son Isaac, but Isaac to become the sole executor when 21 years old.

When Richard wrote his will, his son Isaac was 19 years old, and his sons Richard and Nicholas were almost 30. ##### married? #########Richard lived seven months after writing his will. Perhaps Richard and Nicholas were already established and independent, so Richard wanted to secure the future of his youngest son Isaac?

9 months after wrting will he dies.
