Their first and only child was born 2 years before they married, when Mary was about 24.
They were living in the same street as Mary's parents 3 years after getting married.
Having had no further children for 14 years, they adopt a "Nurse Child" Clara Allen.
Moved out to Littleborough near Rochdale, before she was 60, with her husband and adopted daughter, where she lived for more than 20 years. Their adopted daughter was still living with them when she was 30 and James and Mary were in their 60s.
