Narrative

BIRTH
Janet's father was William Stewart was from Hamilton. He married Janet Mocket in Edinburgh but they lived in Cockenzie, where his wife was born, and where Janet and her 8 siblings were born.
STILL A CHILD
Janet's siblings all got married before they were 20 but Janet was only 15 when she met John Brammall, a 25 year old soldier born in Stockport, posted to Cockenzie. Their son Joseph was born 3 months before Janet's 16th birthday. Joseph was baptised in Hamilton where Janet's father came from. Janet probably went to Hamilton to stay with her grandmother or an aunt, to have her baby because she was so young. Five months after Joseph was born Janet married John Brammall in Edinburgh. Presumably, they didn't marry sooner because John was away with the army?
STOCKPORT
They leave Scotland and go to Stockport, where her husbnd was born. Six years later they have their second child when Janet is 22. The subsequent gaps between their children were 3, 3, 2, 2, 2, 2, 5 years. Janet had her last child when she was 39 and her husband John was 50. Three years after their last child was born, her husband commited suicide by slitting his throat. We don't know what drove John to kill himself, but he was working alone at night. It could have been due to his experiences in the army at a young age, and not having any parents or siblings he could turn to.
LIFE AFTER JOHN
In the 1841 census Janet is living in Wellington Road with her unmarried children, her sons Joseph and Abraham are married and living elsewhere. In the 1851 census her son Joseph and his family have moved back to Wellington Road to live with Janet who is now in her fifties. Janet has not been found in the 1861 census and none of the family are living on Wellington Road. Janet died of old age in 1864, in the Mission Workhouse aged 70, less than a mile from Wellington Road.

Barrack House, Links Road, Port Seton (northwest of Robertson’s garage) is a very old building, especially the west gable. It was there during Napoleonic times as a garrison building, although probably much earlier. The stone for the flagpole for the barracks can be seen at Bay View, which lies to the west of the property.
