Narrative

Elizabeth (aged 5) was recorded as Joseph and Elizabeth's granddaughter in 1871 census, then their daughter in 1881 census. Joseph and Elizabeth would have been 54 and 51 when Elizabeth was born, and she was born 14 years after their youngest child Joseph, so Elizabeth was probably their granddaughter, the daughter of their son John (born 1842). John is 18 and living with his parents in the 1861 census, and Elizabeth was born in 1866. No records have been found for Elizabeth's parents (John and Jane) after her birth, or for their marriage, which is probably why her grandfather decided to look after her in his will, giving her more than 1/3 of his estate.
In 1891 and 1901 censuses Elizabeth is living with her aunt Elizabeth and husband William Langley. She is not working in 1901 though the rest of the household is!
In 1911 census Elizabeth (still single at 45) is living with her cousins, and not working.
