Narrative
THANET TO TRANENT
In 1763, when he was 21, Sampson received 100 pounds (25,000 in 2023) under the terms of his father's will. His brother received the same amount of money when he became 21 in 1766. Sampson was a Ship's Captain. When Sampson was 23 and his brother was 20, they sailed from Thanet, Kent to Tranent, Scotland. The motivation for the brothers doing this is unknown, but it may have something to do with them not inheriting Hopeville House as they had expected, and feeling they had to make a life of their own away from their richer cousins in St Peters?
MARRIAGE AND CHILDREN
Captain Sampson Mockett married Janet Hogg in March 1766. Sampson was 24 and Janet was 20. Their daughter Anne was born 9 months later, and her baptism records Sampson as a Shipmaster from the Isle of Thanet in Kent. Their son Alexander was born in February 1768, named after Janet's father. Perhaps Janet's mother was called Anne, the name of Janet's daughter? A month before Sampson's son was born, his brother's girlfriend was summoned regarding her illegitimate child, born seven months earlier. Perhaps Sampson and his brother left Scotland when they heard this news? Sampson doesn't appear to have taken his family back home to Kent. No marriages or burials have been found for Sampson, his wife, or his children.
