Mockett, RICHARD
Narrative
Both of Richard's marriages were in All Saints, Birchington, and all his children were baptised there, apart from his youngest child, Sara, who was baptised in St Nicholas at Wade, which is where Richard was buried, as he requested in his will.
Richard's first wife, Catharina, was a widow. Their daughter Anna was born three months after they married. Catharina died just two days after Anna's baptism, probably due to complications in childbirth, but their daughter survived into adulthood.
Richard remarried 2 years later. His wife Sara was living in Birchington. Their son Richard was born nine months later but he died when he was 6 months old. It was sixteen months before their next child was born, a daughter called Alice, but she died when she was 3 months old. Richard and Sara had 4 more children, who all lived into adulthood, which must have been a great relief to them.
"Richard conducted the estates of Sir Henry Crispe, during his absence, when he was taken from his house, by pirates, and carried away. The enterprise of carrying him away from Quex, was effected by Captain Golding, of Ramsgate, who had taken refuge with king Charles the second, in France, and adopted this plan to procure money." [Mocket's Journal]
Richard died 14 years after his first marriage, leaving his wife Sara with five young children who he names in his will, Anna 13, Valentine 7, John 5, Richard 2, and Sara 2 months.
In his will Richard left:
- ten pounds to each of his 3 sons, Valentine, John and Richard, to be paid to them when they were 21.
- ten pounds to each of his 2 daughters, Anna and Sara, to be paid to them when they were 18.
- his asked his wife Sara to educate and bring up their children, and to use the children's money to do this.
- Sara was left Richard's "goods and chattells" suggesting there were no items of significant value.
