Campion, SIMON
Narrative
Simon and his wife Anne were both born in Ireland and they married in Belfast.
Their daughter Mary Jane was born 7 years after their marriage, when they were living in St Lucia. There were lots of changes going on in St Lucia in the 1840s, so Simon may have applied to become a policeman out there. There may have been other births before Mary, but she was the only child who moved to Engand.
Two years later, on their return from St Lucia, Simon and Anne's daughter Margaret Ann was born and baptised in Liverpool.
Shortly after this, in 1848, Simon is working as a police constable in Manchester, where he apprehends a clothes-dealer on Rochdale Road. Simon is promoted to Police Sergeant 5 years later. Simon is charged with robbing William Roberts of 6-7 shillings but William says in court that they had been drinking together and were very old friends, so he did not wish to prosecute. Sergeant Harper confirmed that they were both drunk when taken into custody. Simon was discharged, and he stays in the police for about 5 more years.
At the age of 45, SImon is walking the canals checking licences. He may have still been in the police as he was living in a police house in Cheetham with his wife and family.
He leaves the police house in 1861 and spends some time working as a commercial traveller. He is renting 2 adjacent houses in Ancoats, for his grown up family. His daughter Mary is living in one of the houses when she marries in 1868 but she and her husband then moved to live with her in-laws.
Simon's wife dies in early 1873, aged 57. Shortly after her daughter Mary Jane named her daughter Ann Jane after her mother.
A few months later, Simon is in Belle Vue prison, for stealing a pair of stockings. He was sentenced to 14 days hard labour, but who were the stockings for? His wife, for her burial? Or his daughter Mary for the baptism of his granddaughter Ann Jane (named after Simon's wife)? He gives his place of residence as his daughter Mary's.
Just over a year later, Simon is back in Belle Vue prison, for stealing 3 shillings and 8 pence. He is serving 2 calendar months hard labour. This time, he gives his place of residence as his daughter Ann's
His prison records describe Simon as 5 feet 7 tall, fair completion, dark grey hair, and grey/blue eyes. His chin was clean shaven, but he had a moustache and sideburns, possibly of the "mutton chop" variety. He had a scar on his forehead over his nose and another near his left eye. He also had "coil marks" on the back of his neck.
Simon died 3 years after his release from prison, in 1877, aged 62.
