Narrative

1824 Sarah Earp married Joseph Bray a Blacksmith in All Saint's church Forton, where their 10 children were baptised.
1825-1851 the family lived in Sutton, where all their children were born.
1825 daughter Elizabeth born.
1827 daughter Emmeline born. Buried 2 days after her baptism.
1828 daughter Jane born. Buried 2 days after her baptism.
1828 daughter Elizabeth dies aged 3. No children are still alive.
1829 daughter Mary Ann born, followed by John, Sarah, Eliza, George, Emma, and Joseph.
1841 all 7 children are living at home, aged 12 and under.
1851 eldest daughter Mary Ann 21 is working as a Servant in Liverpool, where she would marry her husband. Eldest son John 19 is an Apprentice Blacksmith, living in Weston-under-Lizard, with his uncle John, a farmer of 8 acres. The 5 youngest children are all living at home, aged 10-18.
1852 son George dies.
Joseph and Sarah probably moved from Sutton to Pickstock, when Joseph retired. Joseph died in February 1861 aged 60.
1861 recently married eldest daughter Mary Ann 31 is at home with her husband Charles Gregory 26 a Cabinet Maker. Also at home is unmarried daughter Emma 22 a Dressmaker. Eldest son John 29 is married but still living in Weston-under-Lizard, running his own business as a Blacksmith, employing 1 man and 2 boys. Daughter Sarah 28 is working in Liverpool as a Lady's Maid, for Elizabeth Brandreth a Landed Proprietor aged 35 who would remain single. Sarah would work for her for over 30 years. Daughter Eliza 26 is also working in Liverpool, as a General Servant, and she too would be working for the same family in subsequent years. Youngest son Joseph is working as Grocer's Assistant in nearby Newport.
1871 unmarried daughter Emma 32 a Dressmaker, is the only child who is still at home, looking after her mother, as the youngest daughter. Daughter Mary Ann 41 (now widowed) is back in Liverpool working as a Lady's Maid and General Servant with the same family as 1851. Eldest son John 39 is a succesful Blacksmith, with employees, and 2 servants. Daughter Eliza 36 is working as a Domestic Servant in Liverpool at the same address as 1861. Son Joseph 30 is working at the same Grocer's in Newport.
1876 son Joseph dies aged 36 having never married.
1880 Sarah dies in her 80th year.
1881 unmarried daughters Eliza 45 and Emma 42 are living in Avenue Road Newport, with their widowed sister Mary Ann 51. They are all working as Dressmakers. Mary Ann died in 1882. In 1883 Eliza aged 48 married Charles Jennings aged 60 a retired Publican. The witnesses were brother John and sister Sarah. They lived in Wellington Road where Eliza died in 1893.
1891 daughter Sarah 59 is working as a Lady's Maid in Liverpool for the same woman as in 1861. Sarah died in 1897.
Emma stayed in Avenue Road Newport until her death in 1923 aged 85. She retired when she was 50, and was living in a 5 bedroom house, probably after inheriting money from her sisters.
Sarah's only grandchildren were the children of her oldest son John. Her 4 daughters lived into old age, but 3 of them didn't married, and Eliza didn't marry until she was in her 50s, marrying someone 12 years older. John went to live with his uncle to learn his trade, rather than stayng at home. Married life may not have been very good for Sarah, which is why her children chose to avoid it.
