Narrative

Mary was born at Lower Crimsworth, which was a farm (and still is) just north of Heptonstall. Mary and her two brothers were baptised in Heptonstall. Mary was 7 when her mother died aged 31, probably during childbirth.
Mary's parents, her two brothers, and eight other relatives were buried in two family graves at St Thomas a Becket, Heptonstall. Her paternal grandparents had previously, been buried in the same churchyard, but in their own grave.
Mary's family lived in the Heptonstall area for at least a hundred years, but Mary married her husband in Ashton Under Lyne. The bond for her marriage licence was £250, the equivalent of £25,000 in 2022. Mary was 21 and her husband was a 30 year old widower, working as a cooper. To marry someone at such a distance, and with such a large marriage bond, suggests that Mary's husband probably had "good prospects". Perhaps he was the owner of a barrel making company, rather than a labourer? Mary's younger brother died less than a year after Mary's wedding.
Mary's husband died when he was 45, and was buried in Ashton-Under-Lyne on 7 April 1803. Less than a fortnight later, Mary's father died on 18 April 1803 in Crimsworth, and was buried in Heptonstall. Mary's son John was born 8 months later on 3 December 1803, but he died when he was one.
