Fisher, WILLIAM

Narrative

William's parents moved to Manchester between the 1841 and 1851 censuses with their 3 children. The family were living with his Aunt Ann and her family in 1851. William's older sister Mary 19 was a dressmaker, and his older nephew was a fly maker, who probably got William a job and may have even trained him. William was only 14 when his father died in 1852.
William was a woodworker/carpenter, who worked as a spindle and fly maker. These were both used in the cotton industry. The spindle holds the threads and the fly/flyer shoots backwards and forwards across the width of the fabric. The flying shuttle was one of the key developments in the industrialization of weaving during the early Industrial Revolution. It allowed a single weaver to weave much wider fabrics, and it could be mechanized.
William's marriage signature is flamboyant. A reflection of his character perhaps? William certainly knew his own mind, as he married a Catholic, and gave the wrong name and occupation for his father who had died 8 years previously.
William and his wife Jane had 8 children but only 3 baptisms have been found. The other 5 may have been baptised in a Catholic church and these records are not available. On 5 July 1868 their daughter Mary Elizabeth was baptised at the same time as 3 of her cousins (the children of William's sister Mary (now Pomfret)). Both families were living on Rolleston Street.
William died in 1890 and was buried in Philips Park cemetery. His wife Jane died 7 years later and was buried in the Catholic section of the same cemetery.
